NPS “Reconfirms” Ban on Biking on Parkways without Engaging Cycling Community

Recently, we learned of the release of an National Park Service “Record of Determination Reconfirming and Restating Bicycles are not allowed on the roadways of the Clara Barton and George Washington Memorial Parkways.”  The full ROD text is posted on the NPS website in a PDF.  We have sent the following letter to Superintendent Dottie Marshall, who issued the Record of Determination (ROD), and we await her response.

I echo the comments about the Old Town to Mt. Vernon section. It's interesting that this doc makes no mention of Rock Creek Parkway, particularly after I got pulled over today and informed by park police that NPS doesn't allow any bicycles on any federal parkways. I find myself questioning the truth in that statement.

I don't know about MD/DC, but in WV the DOT roadway schematics explicitly disallow parallel drainage grates on travel lanes. It's plain as day right on the prints.

Great Letter I will support you in this effort. I ride the Parkway Alex to Mount Vernon and want this decision reversed at least for this part of the parkway.

Great response--well-put about the grates. I don't know how much effort it would take to turn them sideways.
