BACKGROUND

Bikes for the World (BfW) is a five-year-old sponsored project of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, a 32-year-old educational and advocacy organization representing the interests of 7,000 members and the region’s cycling community in general.

Bikes for the World’s mission is to put used bicycles, spare parts and accessories from the United States to productive use overseas, providing affordable transport to low-income workers and students as well as to health workers, educators, and others delivering services in low-income communities in receiving countries, primarily in Africa and Central America.

It does this through working in partnership with more than 100 community service groups and faith communities in the lower mid-Atlantic region, to collect, process, and ship these items, delivering them at low cost to partner community development programs in receiving countries.

Bikes for the World also operates the Rockville Youth Bicycle Project in suburban Maryland, offering local youth opportunities to learn about bicycles, bike safety, and the joy of cycling, to fulfill high school community service requirements, and to earn a reconditioned bicycle.

In “re-cycling” otherwise wasted bicycles and providing assistance to the poor overseas, Bikes for the World provides tangible, satisfying community service opportunities to area residents.  It also seeks to raise Americans’ awareness of recycling/reuse, poverty, and transportation issues.

Since its founding in January 2005, Bikes for the World has collected and delivered more than 40,000 bicycles to non-profit partner organizations in more than a dozen developing countries and the United States, earning mentions in regional, national, and international media (Bicycling, Washington Post, NBC, Voice of America, www.america.gov, etc.) and being selected as one of eight area non-profits to receive donated graphic design services in CreateAThon 2005.

Bikes for the World currently employs two full-time individuals--a director managing the overall program, and the Rockville Youth Project Director, managing Bikes for the World’s work with youth in the City of Rockville and surrounding jurisdictions.  Together, the two staff members manage the work of several hundred volunteers and a part-time bookkeeper.
